The world’s best batik and adire textile designer, Chief Nike Okundaye, has been chosen to be an ambassador for the 2030 World Expo in Busan, South Korea.
During a visit to the Nike Art Gallery, the designer received the news from the Republic of South Korea’s ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Kim Young-Chae.
Artists and designers from all over the world will be present at the event.
Okundaye, who has earned her stripes in the design and art worlds, employs Adire and Bakit textiles to create aesthetic themes based on Yoruba mythology and history.
She also draws inspiration from her dreams and life experience for several of her aesthetic motifs. Her performances as the Goddess of Osun are expressed through folklore figures.
Along with teaching rural women at her workshop how to dye cloth with indigo, she also conveys beliefs and societal conventions that are imposed on women through her designs.
