FG Designates Minna Airport as Alternative to Abuja

The Federal Government has officially designated the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Airport in Minna, Niger State, as an alternative airport to the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, during the inauguration of commercial flight operations by Overland Airways at the Minna airport.

Commending the airport’s infrastructure and strategic importance, Keyamo noted that the facility is well-equipped to handle large international aircraft, including Boeing 747s and Boeing 777s.

“The runway is an international runway. A 747 and a triple seven can use this runway. Why this airport has remained underutilised over the years is still a puzzle,” he said.

He further stated that the airport meets international standards both structurally and operationally, expressing dismay over its past neglect.

“Our eyes are on this airport. By the powers conferred on me, I declare Minna Airport as the alternative to Abuja Airport. NCAA, FAAN, take note,” Keyamo declared.

The minister’s declaration is expected to boost aviation activity in Minna and position the airport as a critical backup for flight operations in northern Nigeria, particularly during emergencies or periods of congestion in Abuja.
