“I Needed Help”: Funke Akindele Reflects on Grief, Strength, and Seeking Therapy

In a heartfelt conversation on Chude’s talk show, award-winning actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele shared an emotional chapter of her life, shedding light on her quiet struggles and the turning point that led her to seek therapy.

“I told myself, I can’t continue like this. You need to speak,” she confessed, revealing how grief and personal turmoil had taken a toll on her mental health following the loss of her mother and other private challenges.

Though she had always believed in the importance of therapy, Akindele admitted she avoided it for years, caught in the trap of appearing strong. “I was always trying to be strong,” she said, pointing to the pressure of societal expectations and the fear of public scrutiny.

She recounted how the burden became too heavy to carry alone. “I thought people would talk. That they’d carry my story everywhere,” she said, explaining why she initially resisted opening up to a professional.

But when the silence became unbearable, she reached out for help. Speaking with a therapist proved to be a turning point: “Things I couldn’t share with anyone, I told my therapist. And I’m better.”

Her story is a powerful reminder that seeking help is not a weakness but a necessary step toward healing.
