Nigerian Nurses and Midwives Suspend Nationwide Strike After Government Intervention

The National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) has suspended its nationwide strike, which began on July 29, 2025.

The Minister of Health, Prof. Ali Pate, announced the suspension on Friday after a closed-door meeting with union leaders in Abuja. According to him, the strike was halted following agreements reached between the government and representatives of the nursing body.

While details of the agreement were not disclosed, the union leaders declined to comment on the outcome of the meeting.

NANNM had commenced the industrial action in protest over the federal government’s alleged failure to respond to a 15-day ultimatum issued on July 14, 2025. The strike, which affected nurses and midwives in public healthcare facilities nationwide, was initially scheduled to last until August 5, 2025.
