Senator Alli advocates journalists’ safety, welfare on World Press Freedom Day

Senator Sharafadeen Alli (APC-Oyo South) has advocated better welfare and safety of journalists nationwide as they celebrate 2024 World Press Freedom Day.

This is contained in a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media, Akeem Abas and made available to newsmen on Friday in Ibadan.

Alli acknowledged the pivotal role journalists play in upholding democracy and fostering transparency.

The lawmaker expressed deep concern for the safety of journalists in the line of duty, urging both the Nigerian populace and the government to prioritise the protection of journalists.

He called for an environment where journalists can work freely without fear of intimidation or harm, saying such was essential for the preservation of press freedom.

Alli appealed to media proprietors to prioritise the welfare of journalists by ensuring better remuneration and working conditions.

The lawmaker acknowledged the indispensable contributions of journalists to society, advocating for their fair treatment and recognition within the media industry.

He reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to nurturing the existing relationship between him and journalists across the nation.

Alli lauded the invaluable role journalists play in informing the public, holding leaders accountable, and fostering national development.

The lawmaker reiterated his steadfast dedication to championing press freedom and advocating for the rights as well as safety of journalists in Nigeria.

He pledged to continue working collaboratively with the media fraternity towards achieving a more vibrant and robust democratic society where press freedom thrives.
