The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has issued a strong warning to students about the dangers of drug abuse, emphasizing the need for awareness and preventive measures.
Speaking at the 2024/2025 matriculation ceremony of 406 students at the Federal Cooperative College, Eleyele, Ibadan, Assistant Superintendent of Narcotics (ASN 1), George Tosin Ogungbemiro, highlighted the severe consequences of drug abuse, particularly among students.
“The allure of drugs may seem tempting, but the consequences are devastating. Drug abuse affects health, derails academic progress, and threatens future ambitions,” Ogungbemiro stated.
He reiterated the NDLEA’s commitment to educating students on the risks associated with drug use, stressing that addiction, health complications, and legal troubles could arise from substance abuse. He urged students to create a positive and drug-free environment.
Ogungbemiro encouraged students to engage in activities that promote well-being and academic excellence, advising them to seek positive influences and prioritize their education. “You have the power to shape your future. Surround yourselves with positive influences, seek help when needed, and focus on your studies,” he added.
Addressing the new intakes, the Provost of the college, Dr. Sunday Stephen Oyeleye, urged students to approach their academic journey with dedication and seriousness.
“Your time here is a unique opportunity to build a foundation for your future. Take it seriously and strive for excellence,” he said.
Dr. Oyeleye also emphasized the role of integrity and hard work in achieving success. “Success is not by chance; it results from dedication and ethical behavior. Be diligent in your studies and uphold the values of this institution.”
He further advised students to avoid distractions and vices that could jeopardize their academic goals. “Make wise choices that will benefit your future. Stay focused and avoid temptations that could derail your ambitions.”
The matriculation ceremony marked the enrollment of 406 students in National Diploma (ND), Higher National Diploma (HND), and part-time programs. The event was attended by students’ families and the Commander of Narcotics, Mosunmola Oresegun, who also reinforced the importance of maintaining a drug-free lifestyle.
