EFCC to Grill Tompolo Over Alleged Naira Abuse at Birthday Bash

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has announced plans to question former Niger Delta militant leader, Chief Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, over alleged abuse of the naira.

The anti-graft agency made this known via a post on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Monday, stating emphatically that “nobody is above the law. Tompolo will have questions to answer!” The message was accompanied by a photo showing the alleged naira abuse.

The development follows a viral video posted on X.com on Sunday by user Harrison A (@harreceipts), which appears to show Tompolo dancing at his 54th birthday party in April while a man sprays ₦1,000 notes in front of him.

The footage sparked public outrage and renewed scrutiny of the EFCC’s enforcement approach, with many accusing the commission of bias and selective prosecution.

Under Nigerian law, the spraying, mutilation, or abuse of the naira in public is an offence punishable under the Central Bank of Nigeria Act. The EFCC has in recent months ramped up enforcement efforts, summoning celebrities and public figures involved in similar acts.

Tompolo, a former commander of the defunct Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), has yet to respond to the allegations as of press time.
