Battling the Blues – How to Overcome Daily Depression

By Temidayo Aboderin

In a fast-paced world marked by economic challenges, emotional fatigue, and social pressures, daily depression has silently crept into the lives of many Nigerians, especially the youth. As part of our Wellness This Week series, we shed light on practical steps to overcome this often-ignored mental health challenge.

According to recent reports by mental health experts, daily depression—characterized by persistent low mood, fatigue, loss of interest, and irritability—has become more common in urban and semi-urban areas. Yet, many continue to suffer in silence due to stigma and a lack of awareness.

  1. Speak Up – Don’t Bottle It In
Depression thrives in silence. Whether it’s a trusted friend, a family member, or a professional counselor, talking about your feelings is the first step toward healing. Sharing unburdens the mind and allows others to help.
  2. Create a Simple Daily Routine
Establishing a routine—waking up, eating, and sleeping at regular times—can bring structure to the chaos. Routines create a sense of control and predictability, both essential in fighting emotional fatigue.
  3. Limit Social Media Time
Excessive exposure to curated online lifestyles can fuel feelings of inadequacy. Set daily limits, follow uplifting pages, and take digital breaks when needed.
  4. Exercise, Even Lightly
Studies show that even a 10-minute walk can lift your mood. Physical activity releases endorphins, nature’s mood enhancers.
  5. Set Small, Achievable Goals
Break your day into small tasks. Each accomplished task brings a sense of achievement, boosting your self-worth and energy.
  6. Nourish Your Body
Skipping meals or poor diets can worsen depression. Eat balanced meals with fruits, vegetables, and proteins. Stay hydrated.
  7. Seek Professional Help
There is no shame in seeing a psychologist or psychiatrist. Depression is a health condition, not a character flaw. Early treatment can make a world of difference.

As we continue to raise awareness on mental health this week, let us remember that depression is real, but so is hope. With the right steps, support, and mindset, daily depression can be conquered.

If you or someone you know is struggling, reach out. Your mind matters.
