A governorship aspirant on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State, Dr. Ayobami Wasiu Lam-Adesina, has articulated a policy blueprint focused on revitalising education, improving healthcare delivery, and promoting grassroots development.
Lam-Adesina made this known on Wednesday while speaking at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council Guest Forum, held at the NUJ Press Centre, Iyaganku, Ibadan.
The aspirant, who is the eldest son of former Oyo State governor, the late Alhaji Lam Adesina, said his political vision is rooted in the ideals of inclusive governance championed by past leaders, including his father, the late Chief Bola Ige, and Chief Obafemi Awolowo.
He explained that his decision to join the 2027 governorship race was driven by a desire to restore declining standards in public education and social services.
According to him, equal access to quality education, which once enabled individuals from modest backgrounds to rise to prominence, must be re-established.
“I come from a humble background despite my father’s position. The opportunities that helped people like him succeed through public education must be restored. That system is no longer what it used to be,” he said.
Lam-Adesina decried the falling standard of public schools, noting that institutions that once produced leaders across various sectors have lost their competitive edge.
He stressed the need for government to rebuild public schools to ensure that every child, irrespective of socio-economic background, has access to quality education.
The APC aspirant also identified healthcare reform as a key priority, drawing from his professional experience in the United Kingdom’s healthcare system, where he served at director level.
He advocated for strengthening primary healthcare to tackle preventable diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, and vision-related conditions through early diagnosis and community-based interventions.
“We need a functional primary healthcare system that detects health issues early. These are basic needs, yet many people still lack access to them,” he added.
On economic development, Lam-Adesina called for the revival of Oyo State’s industrial base to generate employment, while also promoting technical and vocational education.
He emphasised that skills such as plumbing, electrical work, and carpentry should be encouraged alongside formal education to address unemployment among youths.
Speaking on governance, he underscored the importance of local government autonomy, noting that meaningful development must begin at the grassroots level.
“With most local governments being rural, autonomy is essential to ensure development reaches the people,” he said.
The governorship hopeful also highlighted opportunities presented by the Electricity Act 2023, urging states to explore power generation and alternative energy sources like solar to drive industrial growth.
He reiterated the need for leadership that prioritises the welfare of the majority, stressing that governance should be people-centred.
“We must ensure a better future for our children. That is the driving force behind my ambition,” he said.
The NUJ Guest Forum provided an avenue for journalists to engage the aspirant on his plans, leadership capacity, and strategies for addressing governance challenges ahead of the 2027 elections.
