Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has reaffirmed her commitment to ending Tuberculosis (TB) in the country by 2030 with an additional ₦1 billion donation through the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI).
The latest donation, announced today at 2025 World TB Day Community Outreach in Sauka Village, Abuja, follows a similar ₦1 billion pledge made in March 2024 when she was named the Global and National Stop-TB Champion.
A Call for Collective Action
Describing TB as a “health emergency” that demands urgent intervention, Mrs. Tinubu urged Nigerians to get tested and know their TB status.
“The statistics from the World Health Organization’s 2024 Global TB Report are alarming. In Nigeria, one person dies of TB every seven minutes. This means that in the short time we will spend at this event, many more lives will be lost if we do not act swiftly and decisively,” she warned.
She emphasized that ending TB requires a multi-sectoral approach, involving the government, traditional and religious leaders, lawmakers, healthcare workers, private sector organizations, non-governmental organizations, and international partners.
Strengthening TB Control Efforts
As the Global and National Stop-TB Champion, the First Lady reaffirmed her commitment to increasing funding, advocating for policy reforms, and mobilizing partnerships to enhance TB awareness, prevention, and treatment.
“In addition, I will continue to amplify the voices of TB survivors, fight against stigma and discrimination, and ensure that women, children, and marginalized groups have equal access to TB care,” she stated.
