Court orders ASUU to call off strike

The National Industrial Court on Wednesday ordered the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to call off its seven-month strike.

Recall that ASUU embarked on a strike on February 14, over the failure of the government to meet its demands including issues on funding of tertiary institutions and review of lecturers’ salaries and allowances.

However, months after the strike, the federal government through its counsel, James Igwe asked the industrial court to issue an interlocutory injunction restraining ASUU from taking further steps as regards the strike, pending the determination of the substantive suit.

Court orders ASUU to call off strike
Justice Polycap Hamman issued the order for suspension of the strike on Wednesday, September 21.

The judge invoked section 18 of the Trade Dispute Act and also said he was acting in the national interest of the Nigerian students to grant the request of the Federal Government.

This is however coming after the National President of ASUU, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke warned that a court-ordered return to the classroom would ruin the education sector.
