Effective Solutions for Tackling Body Odour

Body odour, medically known as bromhidrosis, occurs when sweat mixes with bacteria on the skin. While sweating is a natural body function, unpleasant smells can be a sign of poor hygiene, improper diet, or underlying health conditions.

A dermatologist based in Ibadan, noted that body odour is preventable and treatable. “The first step is to maintain proper personal hygiene. Bathing at least twice a day with antibacterial soap, especially after physical activity, helps to reduce the bacterial load on the skin,”.

Below are some recommended solutions to combat body odour:

Regular Bathing: Use antibacterial or medicated soap to cleanse the body thoroughly, paying attention to areas like the armpits, groin, and feet.

Use of Deodorants and Antiperspirants: While deodorants mask odour, antiperspirants help to reduce sweating. Opt for products with long-lasting effects and reapply during the day if necessary.

Wear Clean and Breathable Clothes: Natural fabrics like cotton allow the skin to breathe. Wearing clean clothes daily, especially underwear, helps prevent bacterial buildup.

Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of water helps flush out toxins from the body, reducing the intensity of body odour.

Watch Your Diet: Foods like garlic, onions, and spicy meals can influence body scent. A balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables promotes a more neutral body smell.

Shaving or Trimming Body Hair: Keeping underarm and pubic hair short or clean-shaven can reduce the areas where bacteria thrive.

Home Remedies: Natural solutions such as applying lemon juice, apple cider vinegar, or baking soda to affected areas can help neutralize body odour.

Medical Intervention: In severe cases, persistent body odour may be a sign of an underlying health issue. Consulting a doctor or dermatologist for professional evaluation is advised.

Health personalities also stress the importance of public awareness and education about hygiene habits, especially among teenagers and people in densely populated communities.

“Good hygiene isn’t a luxury—it’s essential for health, social interaction, and self-esteem,” Dr. Akinyemi added.

As the weather continues to warm up, individuals are encouraged to take proactive steps in ensuring they stay fresh and odour-free throughout the day.
