FUNAAB mourn over student’s abduction, killing

The management of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, has mourned the de#th of the 300-level student of Pure and Applied Botany of the university, Christianah Idowu, saying that her abduction and senseless murder in Ikorodu, Lagos State, has left the entire university broken-hearted.

The university conveyed this condolence message in a statement made available to journalists on Friday and signed by Olasunkanmi Olajide, acting Head, Directorate of Public Relations of the institution.

The university said that the news of the abduction and subsequent killing of Idowu had brought the school great pain and untold sorrow.

It has, therefore, demanded that the security agencies ensure that those behind the terrible acts paid for their misdeeds.

The statement disclosed further that a university delegation led by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Prof. Olukayode Akinyemi and the Student Union President, Comrade Ibraheem Adeyemi, visited the family on Friday, during which time the university registered its heartfelt condolences with the bereaved mother and other family members.

The statement partly reads, “It is with profound sorrow and deep sympathy that the Management of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) commiserates with the family, friends, and the entire student body on the tragic loss of Miss Christianah Idowu, a 300-Level student of Pure and Applied Botany at the College of Biosciences (COLBIOS).

“The news of her abduction in Lagos and senseless murder has left us all heartbroken, and the entire FUNAAB community mourns her painful passing.

“To demonstrate our unwavering support, a delegation led by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Olukayode Akinyemi and the Student Union President, Comrade Ibraheem Adeyemi, visited the family today, September 6, 2024, met the bereaved mother and extended the University’s heartfelt condolences and offered comfort during this most difficult time.

“We now call upon the Nigeria Police Force to expedite their investigation and ensure that justice is not delayed. This act of violence must not go unanswered. As we grieve, we pray that God grants her family and loved ones the strength to bear this huge loss.

“We also support the entire FUNAAB community, urging everyone to stay strong and united in the face of this tragedy.

“Once again, our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Miss Christianah Idowu, and we remain committed to seeing that justice is served for this grievous wrong.”

The Lagos State Police Command had on Thursday said a 23-year-old Ayomide Adeleye, suspected to have kidnapped and killed Idowu, is now in its custody.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, disclosed this in a terse post on the X handle.
