Organ Trafficking:Ekweremadu And Wife Set To Face Final Judgement In UK

Former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, his wife Beatrice alongside their doctor, Obinna Obeta, will today May 5, face a UK court for sentencing.

The trio was in March this year convicted for conspiring to harvest the kidney of a trader they flew into the UK from Nigeria. The couple and their doctor were arrested in June last year and have been on trial since then.

Justice Jeremy Johnson of Central Criminal Court Old Bailey found them guilty under the modern-day slavery act of the United Kingdom. Though the couple told the court that the organ was for their ailing 25-year-old daughter, Sonia. However, the United Kingdom Modern Slavery act 2015 frowns at Human trafficking under which organ harvesting falls and is punishable with a maximum sentence of life imprisonment upon conviction.
