Oyo civil society group insists on protest despite labour’s position

Some members of the civil society organisations under the aegis of Joint Action Front in Oyo state have said they will continue with the protest against fuel subsidy on Thursday as earlier planned despite that the Federal Government has suspended the plan to remove fuel subsidy.

Members of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Trade Union Congress and other unionists had announced the suspension of the planned protest in Oyo State.

The national officer of the NLC, Mike Olanrewaju and the Chairman of TUC in Oyo State, Emmanuel Ogundiran,
had said while briefing journalists that the planned protest has been suspended because the Federal Government has also suspended the implementation of removal of subsidy on fuel.
However, the Secretary of Joint Action Front in Oyo state, Abiodun Bamigboye, while addressing journalists said members of the civil society organisations would continue with the protest despite government decision.

He said “We are going ahead with the protest notwithstanding the suspension of the subsidy removal. We are ready for them.
“We are here this afternoon ordinarily in solidarity with the decision of the NLC on the planned protest against the move to hike fuel pump price, but unfortunately, when we got here, the story changed and the changed story is that the National Secretariat of NLC, as usual, had decided to suspend the planned action.

“And we at the civil society organisation are not satisfied with the decision. It is a betrayal on the expectations of the masses of Nigeria. It is on this basis that we announce that the civil society organisation in Oyo State under a banner that will be determined later will go ahead with the protest on Thursday.

“Not only that, to express our opposition against the deregulation of the oil sector which is the root cause of all these problems we are facing. We cannot continue to fight against the symptoms, we are ready to fight the cause and not until that is done, we are not ready to drop our agitation.”
