SWEGOP Calls for Stronger Security in Border Communities Following Rescue of Oriire Abducted Pupil.

The South West Guild of Online Publishers (SWEGOP) has called for enhanced security measures in Nigeria’s border communities following the successful rescue of pupils and teachers abducted in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

The victims, who spent six months in captivity, were rescued on Friday through a coordinated operation involving military and paramilitary personnel.

In a statement issued on Sunday and jointly signed by the Guild’s Chairman, Bisi Oladele, and Public Relations Officer, Remi Oladoye, SWEGOP commended President Bola Tinubu, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, and the security agencies for their commitment and leadership in securing the release of the more than 40 pupils and teachers.

The Guild described the rescue as a clear demonstration of the impact of strong political will and effective collaboration among security agencies in addressing insecurity.

SWEGOP also praised the gallantry, resilience, and professionalism displayed by the security personnel throughout the operation, noting that their efforts have restored hope to the affected families and the people of Oyo State.

The Guild expressed sympathy to the families of security personnel and residents who lost their lives during the incident, praying for the peaceful repose of the deceased.

According to SWEGOP, the repeated attacks on border communities reveal a troubling pattern in which terrorists exploit areas with inadequate security presence, poor road networks, weak telecommunications services, and easy escape routes across international borders.

The Guild therefore urged governments at all levels to strengthen collaboration among security agencies, community leaders, and other stakeholders to better protect vulnerable border communities.

It further appealed to both the Federal Government and the Oyo State Government to sustain investments in intelligence gathering, surveillance, rapid response mechanisms, and community policing to ensure schools remain safe environments for teaching and learning.
SWEGOP reaffirmed its commitment to responsible journalism and pledged continued support for initiatives that promote peace, public safety, and the protection of lives and property across the South-West and Nigeria as a whole.
