Afonja’s Death: I’ve lost a mentor, respected Nigerian- Senator Alli

Senator Sharafadeen Alli (APC-Oyo South) has mourned the death of his mentor, Prince Sulaiman Ajibola Afonja, a former Secretary (Minister) of Labour and Productivity, who died on Sunday night at the University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan.

This is contained in a statement he personally signed and made available to newsmen on Monday.

Alli in a heartfelt tribute, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of a mentor, father , distinguished personality and former Chairman of First Bank of Nigeria.

He said that Prince Afonja’s passing marks the end of an era for many who knew him personally, adding his contributions to Nigeria and the financial industry were invaluable.

Alli said that the late Afonja’s leadership at the First Bank of Nigeria and minister were marked by innovation, integrity, and unwavering commitment to excellence.

He described his tenure at First Bank of Nigeria as that which left lasting impact on the institution and the broader financial landscape in Nigeria.

The lawmaker said that Afonja’s death has sent shockwaves through the community, recalling his significant contributions to the banking sector, philanthropic causes and Nigeria.

Alli emphasised the profound sense of loss felt by those who had the privilege of working closely with Prince Afonja, describing him as a mentor, philanthropist, visionary leader and pillar of the community.

He commiserated with the good people of Nigeria, Oyo State and Oyo town, extending deepest condolences to the family of Prince Afonja.

The lawmaker acknowledged the shared grief of losing such a prominent and respected leader, urging the family to find solace in the remarkable legacy he left behind.

Senator Alli prayed for the repose of Prince Afonja’s soul, expressing hope that the memory of his achievements and commitment to the betterment of Nigeria would continue to inspire many.
