The National Chairman of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), Dan Nwanyanwu, has warned President Bola Tinubu to be cautious of some individuals claiming to support his administration, saying their actions could damage his popularity ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Tuesday, Nwanyanwu argued that certain supporters of the President are becoming overzealous and are driving Nigerians away from Tinubu rather than helping his political prospects.
According to him, many citizens who initially supported Tinubu because of the circumstances under which he assumed office have become disappointed due to the conduct of some people around the President.
Although Nwanyanwu is also interested in contesting for the presidency, he said the actions of these supporters are making Tinubu increasingly unpopular among voters.
The ZLP chairman also rejected suggestions that the 2027 election outcome is already settled, insisting that opposition parties will challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) at the polls.
He maintained that the election would be fiercely contested and warned against any attempt to manipulate the results.
His remarks come as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general election. President Tinubu has already secured the APC presidential ticket and is expected to seek a second term in office.
Supporters of the President continue to promote his administration’s reforms and achievements across the country, while the APC has strengthened its political influence through a series of defections from opposition parties, including governors and other elected officials.
Despite these gains, the ruling party continues to face criticism over economic challenges such as rising inflation, increasing living costs, and widespread hardship. Opposition figures have indicated that these issues will be central themes in their campaigns.
Earlier this year, President Tinubu stated that he remains committed to his economic reforms despite public criticism and concerns about hardship. He argues that the policies are necessary for Nigeria’s long-term economic recovery.
The 2027 presidential race is expected to feature Tinubu, Atiku Abubakar of the ADC, and Peter Obi of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), who were also leading contenders in the 2023 election. Tinubu won that election with over eight million votes, while Obi and Atiku each secured more than six million votes
