S’WEST NULGE ADVOCATES LOCAL GOVERNMENT AUTONOMY IN NIGERIA

In an advocacy, Comrade Abimbola Babalola, Vice President General, Southwest of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), has called for the empowerment and financial autonomy of local governments across Nigeria.

The union underscored the crucial role that empowered local governments can play in driving economic development, improving infrastructure, and fostering participatory governance.

The call for local government autonomy, the union emphasized, is not merely a demand but a necessity for the country’s sustainable development and democratic deepening.

The union also lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his steps towards achieving this critical objective.

NULGE also appealed to stakeholders, including traditional rulers, religious leaders, students, politicians, artisans, market women, the media, and civil society organizations, to support the cause.

The union firmly believes that with collective effort and unwavering commitment, the goal of autonomous local governments can be achieved, leading to a brighter future for Nigerian communities.

The significance of local government autonomy, as highlighted by NULGE, extends beyond mere governance. Empowered local governments can enhance rural-urban integration, promote balanced regional development, and encourage citizen participation in decision-making processes.

This, in turn, will foster a sense of ownership and accountability among citizens, leading to more efficient utilization of resources for the benefit of communities.

In addition, financial autonomy for local governments will ensure direct allocation of funds from the Federation Account, leading to increased transparency, accountability, and efficient utilization of resources for developmental projects.

In the aftermath of NULGE’s call for local government autonomy, several questions arose regarding the feasibility of implementing such a policy in Nigeria.

However, NULGE maintained that with sustained advocacy and political will, the obstacles can be overcome.

The union also emphasized the need for extensive public education on the benefits of autonomous local governments. By raising awareness among citizens and creating a groundswell of support, the political leadership can be influenced to embrace the policy.
