Nollywood actress, Moyo Lawal, has dismissed claims that she ordered the arrest of a social media user over a viral AI-generated image of herself.
The controversy began after the actress addressed online critics who had accused her of bleaching her skin. In response, she shared altered AI photos showing a darker version of herself, questioning if her detractors were satisfied and would now allow her some peace. She noted that she was being targeted over an issue she believes is widespread.
A Twitter user identified as ScoobyDoe subsequently mocked the actress, using her as an example in his commentary. He later alleged that he was arrested and detained at Area F, Ikeja, following what he described as a harmless exchange with Lawal. According to him, he was invited by the Divisional Police Officer, detained for over a week, and only released after his lawyer intervened.
Reacting to the claims, Lawal denied any involvement in the alleged arrest, stressing that she would not infringe on anyone’s fundamental rights over an opinion about an AI-generated image. She added that if she ever took such action, it would be publicly known, while lamenting what she described as recurring false narratives about her online.
The actress also used the opportunity to caution critics and urged them to allow her live without undue harassment.
Her statement comes amid renewed public attention following her return to social media, during which she addressed a previously leaked intimate video involving her former partner. Lawal explained that the footage was released without her consent, describing it as a violation of her privacy and trust, and disclosed that the individual involved was her ex-fiancé.
She further clarified circumstances surrounding the incident, noting that she had agreed to record the video at the time due to the nature of their relationship, which she said was heading toward marriage.
The incident had earlier sparked widespread reactions, with public figures such as Mary Njoku, Uche Maduagwu, and Prince Eke offering differing opinions on the matter.
