The Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) has announced an upward review of fees for standard passports, with the new charges set to take effect from Monday, September 1, 2025.
In a statement issued on Thursday, August 28, by its Public Relations Officer, ACI A.S. Akinlabi, the Service explained that the increment became necessary to maintain the quality, security features, and global integrity of the Nigerian passport.
New Fee Structure
32-page passport (5-year validity): ₦100,000
64-page passport (10-year validity): ₦200,000
Akinlabi clarified that the adjustment applies only to applications made within Nigeria, while Nigerians in the diaspora will continue to pay the existing rates of $150 for a 32-page passport (5 years) and $230 for a 64-page passport (10 years).
He further assured that despite the fee hike, the Service remains committed to balancing effective service delivery with accessibility for Nigerians.
“The review, which affects only applications within Nigeria, is aimed at safeguarding the integrity of the Nigerian passport while ensuring services remain efficient and accessible,” Akinlabi stated.
The announcement is already generating debate among Nigerians, many of whom are grappling with rising living costs. While some analysts believe the increment could enhance service delivery and reduce racketeering, others argue it may further burden low-income earners.
Civil society groups and travel experts have long urged the government to match fee increases with faster processing times, improved customer service, and stricter measures against extortion in passport .
