Press Freedom Day: Oyo NUJ Advocates Fair Treatment of Journalists*

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council, has called for urgent and deliberate measures to improve the welfare of journalists across the state, as the world commemorates World Press Freedom Day.

The Union noted that while the media landscape in Oyo State has witnessed significant expansion with the proliferation of private radio and television stations, the welfare of journalists working in many of these organisations remains alarmingly poor.

The NUJ observed that many media professionals are subjected to low wages, irregular salary payments, and inadequate working conditions, a situation that undermines professionalism and threatens the integrity of journalism practice.

In a statement jointly signed by the Chairman, Mr Akeem Abas, and the Secretary, Mr Temidayo Adu,The Council stressed that a free press cannot thrive where journalists are economically vulnerable, adding that poor welfare exposes practitioners to undue influence and compromises ethical standards expected of the profession.

While acknowledging the role of private investors in broadening the media space, the Union urged owners and management of broadcast stations to prioritise staff welfare, implement fair remuneration structures, and adhere to acceptable labour standards.

The NUJ also called on the Oyo State Government to take proactive steps towards upgrading its broadcast stations, equipping them with modern facilities, and repositioning them to meet global best practices in public service journalism.

It further emphasised that government-owned media outfits should serve as benchmarks for excellence, professionalism, and staff welfare, thereby setting standards for private operators to emulate.

The Union also appealed to government at all levels, security agencies, and members of the public to accord journalists the respect and cooperation they deserve in the discharge of their duties, noting that media practitioners play a critical role in informing, educating, and entertaining society.
