How Bodija Got Its Name

Bodija, one of Ibadan’s most popular neighborhoods, derives its name from historical events linked to agriculture and land use. The area was originally a vast farmland where cattle rearing and food production thrived.

In the 1950s, the government established the Bodija Market to decongest the older markets in Ibadan.

The name “Bodija” is believed to have originated from a Yoruba phrase meaning “come with wealth” or “a place of prosperity.” This was influenced by the economic success of traders and farmers in the area.

Today, Bodija remains a major commercial and residential hub in Ibadan, known for its market, estates, and business activities.
