ASUU Elects Prof. Chris Piwuna as New President Amid Tensions Over Allowances, Brain Drain

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has elected Professor Chris Piwuna, a consultant psychiatrist and Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Jos, as its new president.

Piwuna succeeds Professor Victor Osodeke, a soil science expert from the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State.

The leadership transition was confirmed during ASUU’s 23rd National Delegates Congress, held on Sunday in Benin City, Edo State.

According to reliable sources, the election was keenly contested between Prof. Piwuna and Prof. Adamu Babayo of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi.

Piwuna assumes the union’s top position at a critical time, as tensions simmer within the academic community over the Federal Government’s disbursement formula for the recently released Earned Academic Allowances. The union also continues to grapple with the persistent issue of brain drain affecting Nigerian universities.

More details are expected to emerge as the new leadership sets its agenda in the days ahead.
