As Nigeria continues its battle against malaria — a disease that claims thousands of lives each year — health experts and traditional practitioners are highlighting the potential benefits of natural remedies in managing the illness.
While medical treatment remains the most effective way to cure malaria, especially using World Health Organization-approved drugs like Artemisinin-based Combination Therapies (ACTs), many communities are turning to nature to ease symptoms and support recovery.

Below are some popular natural remedies widely used across African homes:
- Neem Leaves (Dogonyaro)
Renowned for its bitter taste and medicinal value, neem leaves have long been used to treat malaria symptoms. The leaves are typically boiled and consumed as tea to reduce fever and body pain.
“Dogonyaro contains active compounds that can help reduce inflammation and fight infection,” says herbalist Sulaimon Kareem, based in Ibadan.
- Papaya Leaf Extract
Crushed papaya leaves, when juiced, are believed to boost platelet counts and support the immune system—critical in malaria recovery. Though not a cure, the juice is widely used in traditional healing. - Lemongrass and Ginger Tea
A mixture of lemongrass and ginger boiled into tea helps reduce fever, detoxify the body, and improve hydration. Many malaria sufferers report feeling relieved after drinking the herbal brew. - Citrus Fruits
Oranges, lemons, and other vitamin C-rich fruits help strengthen the immune system during malaria infection. They also aid in detoxification and keep the body hydrated. - Garlic and Turmeric
These powerful anti-inflammatory ingredients are often used to enhance the body’s defense against malaria parasites. They can be taken with warm water or added to meals for daily immunity.
Traditional Remedies vs. Modern Medicine
Health professionals warn, however, that while natural methods can provide support, they should not replace hospital care.
