Oyo State Honours Late Professor Peller with Posthumous Merit Award*

IBADAN, NIGERIA — In a landmark event marking the 50th anniversary of Oyo State, the state government on Tuesday officially recognized the legendary magician and global icon, Professor Moshood Abiola Peller, with a prestigious Merit Award.

The presentation took place as part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations, highlighting individuals who have significantly shaped the state’s history over the last half-century.

Governor Seyi Makinde, while presenting the award, emphasized that the honour was a testament to Professor Peller’s “outstanding contributions to the development of Oyo State.”

The Governor noted that Peller’s unique career as a master of illusion brought international attention to the state and showcased the diverse talent inherent in its people.

The award was received on behalf of the family by Hon. Shina Peller, the Ayedero of Yorubaland and a former member of the House of Representatives.

In his accepting speech, the younger Peller expressed the family’s deep gratitude to the state government.

“Our father was a man of many parts—a legendary magician, a global icon, and a dedicated showman. But above all his titles, the one he held most dear was that of a ‘Son of Oyo State,'” Shina Peller stated.

Speaking on cultural representation, Shina Peller noted that his father carried Oyo heritage into global arenas, ensuring the world recognized his Nigerian roots.

Touching on the significance of the timing of the award, Ayedero Peller said receiving the award during the State’s Golden Jubilee was a moment of great pride, marking the family’s connection to the state’s 50-year journey of progress.

Also, Peller remarked that the award sends a “powerful message” that creative service to the state is valued and will never be forgotten.

Born in Iseyin, Oyo State, Professor Moshood Abiola Peller was Africa’s most famous magician. His “Magic Shows” were a staple of Nigerian entertainment from the 1960s through the 1990s, often featuring elaborate illusions that toured the continent and Europe.

His recognition during the 50th-anniversary activities serves to cement his status not just as an entertainer, but as a pioneer of the creative economy in Western Nigeria.
